deathbed

June 14, 2010

i remember this tour very well. i think it was 1995. me and Josh Yochus went to san diego to see the show, so i actually missed the show at the Barn that this was filmed at. the tour was 108, Coalesce and Bloodlet. holy fuck. to some people now, that’s like a dream lineup. at the show in SD, there was maybe 100 people there.

i believe ive told this story before, but here goes again. Josh and I went down and i think there were like 3 or 4 shows that weekend. we got to the venue, which i believe was around 6th and C downtown. there was a fucking RAVE going on. im not joking. a rave. the rave ended around 11 or 1130, and then this dude named Squelch came up and did spoken word. i’d seen Squelch do spoken/performace art before, but this time was different. he had himself strung up on a fence or a cross, and was wearing a suit and had fake blood all over. there was stobe lights, and creepy music, and he kept laughing maniacally and saying random stuff, then gave fellatio to a handgun.

at midnight, yes MIDNIGHT, 108 took the stage. i was right up front, and had my camera ready, and as soon as the first notes rang out for “opposition”, someone knocked me forward and the batteries flew out of my camera. fucked.

Bloodlet took the stage next. one of my favorite bands now, i think i had only heard them a few times before this. i dont remember much about their time on stage.

Coalesce was up next, and it was about 2am at this point. they only had the first 7″ out at this time, and in fact the cd version has pictures from this show on the cover, taken by my friend Chad Ronillo. they were frantic and amazing in the original lineup.

Gehenna played last, and by the time they finished and we got out of the show, it was about 5am. we went back to Mike Cheese’s house, unrolled our sleeping bags on the kitchen floor, slept til about noon and then drove home.

one of the most clear images i have from that whole night is of Rob Fish. there was a back room in the building, where all the bands had their equipment and their merch set up on blankets, and there were a few couches around where people were randomly sleeping. Rob was sitting on the floor, with his back against a wall. i dont think id ever seen someone look so fucking bummed out in my life.

this particular video was shot by Ken Crawford, at the Barn in Riverside, CA on the same tour. i think the night before the san diego show. i love the fisheye.

another video from Coalesce at Chain Reaction.

again, i feel very fortunate to have filmed from this angle. jes and sean are very clear in the video. i set the camera on the amp at the beginning, so theres no movement. as soon as i knew things were going to explode, i picked up the camera.

DISEMBODIED 8.14.98

June 6, 2010

As i had previously stated, I received a few live recordings recently. This is one of them.

I’m pretty sure this was recorded on a hand-held recording device, and not soundboard, but i could be wrong. The show was at the RCKNDY.

This was recorded on a tour after the release of If God Only Knew, but before the Oxymoron split or Heretic. Justin Kane was still on drums, and I’m assuming Tony “Tubes” was on guitar.

The sound quality and song selection was so good, I knew that i had to unleash this beast upon the world.  You can tell that the mic wasn’t passed around very much (if at all) because Aaron’s voice is so prevalent. It’s very clear, and his added inflections come across very clearly.

Personally, I LOVE live recordings, and this one is an amazing example of a live recording.  It’s interesting to hear Aaron pronounce Diablerie with a “die” instead of a “dee”.

It was cleaned up in a recording studio by Daniel Bieranowski.  Mostly just editing out the feedback, clipping, etc.  I am very grateful to Dan for helping out.

So listen and enjoy, and just wish that you were there.

last time Coalesce came through, a few things happened.

1. sean ingram got me hooked on whiskey

2. nathan ellis made me feel really embarrassed

3. they fucking blew me away

this time, a few more things happened

1. i possibly turned sean ingram into a whiskey snob

2. nellis appologized to me profusely

3. they fucking blew me away. not just on stage either. they are honestly one of the nicest bunch of people ive hung around in a long time. last time, i got so drunk that i had to be taken home and couldnt hang out after the show. this time, they all came to my salon the morning after the show, and we traded haircuts for vinyl.

i shot this video with my Flip camera when they played chain reaction on may 17th, 2010 on the tour with converge. the video starts off interesting, then gets rather boring for a while as my camera became fixated on their asses. but at around 4:19, it becomes clear that Jes wants to make things more interesting. i feel very lucky to have caught this footage. enjoy.
