the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. It’s a new year, and i figured i’d try something new.
my version of this blog was to be a hardcore version of Bastard Squad, but that never quite panned out. i think it was lack of content, or whatever. so im going to just post whatever i want. videos, links, photos… not just of hardcore, but expect some of that.
i’ve been listening to a lot of VVITCH HOUSE lately. bands that you cant pronounce or google, and that either release music on Soundcloud, their blogs, or limited cds.
im currently listening to a dj set from oOoOO, which may or may not be pronounced “ooooooh”. either way, its a cool mix. i dont really feel like explaining what witch house is, so ill let this do it for me.
so, im selling a friend’s record collection, and ive come across a few gems. luckily, for christmas i bought myself a fancy vinyl to mp3 gadget, and although ive been slow on ripping stuff, ive done some things here and there.
a couple times while selling these records, ive stumbled on something interesting. like the time i opened a Turning Point 12″ cover to take a pic of the vinyl, to discover it was a test press. you know, little things like that.
last week i opened a copy of Farside’s last 7″, and found a flexi record shoved in. now, flexi records are kind of weird. they get crinkled easily, they dont sound very good, and apparently they havent been in production since 2000 (although i read that Erika records was going to press them, i cant find i on their site). anyway, the flexi that came inside apparently featured (at the time) unreleased songs by Farside and Sensefield.
i asked Jake from Stuck In The Past to write up something about the record, and this is what he came up with. kind of sounds like a commercial-
Farside- “save it for the children” – Wow,talk about unexpected (or maybe not if you consider the music genre hodgepodge that was Farside’s 1999 swan song The Monroe Doctrine, still considered by many to be their best work). I can only assume that Farside co-conspirator K Murphy took the reins on this 50 second bit of grindcore madness. I myself am firmly in the “if Murphy or Popeye farted and mixed it to stereo, I’d buy it” camp (and have been for over 20 some odd years now), so, of course, I loved every second of it. If you’re not familiar with this band, you need to get your ass over to RevHQ.com and change that RIGHT NOW.
Sensefield – “untitled” Now this sounds like the Sensefield that we all know and love. Great little ditty from the musical powerhouse that was Jon Bunch, Rodney Sellars and company. Once again, if you’re not familiar with this band, you need to get your ass over to RevHQ.com and change that RIGHT NOW.
Thank as always to jav for ripping this for the world to hear once again. – Jake
been a while since we posted. might as well start somewhere.
im not the biggest Thursday fan, but i AM a fan of live recordings. like i had mentioned previously, i received a bunch of live recordings, and this was in them. i know that Thursday is NOT a hardcore band, but i figured id branch out a little.
the sound quality on this recording is pretty good. not the best ive heard, not the worst by any means. i tried to find some info on the show its from, and it seems like Jimmy Eat World played this show too. it has tracks from Full Collapse and War All The Time. before the song “war all the time”, Geoff says “this is a new song”
theres also an interesting cover song. they play the Far song “mother mary” with Jonah doing some vocals.
before there was 7 Generations, there was 7th Generation. odd that two vegan straightedge bands would come from the same county, about 8 years apart.. but it happened.
the above video was shot at Koo’s Cafe in Santa Ana, in 1996. it was from a show that was actually an anarchist festival, and 7th Generation was on the show because of their vegan beliefs.
i dont remember too much about this band, except for that every member 100% disappeared from the hardcore scene within less than 2 years of this show. i hung out with Robin for a hot second in 1996.
the weirdest thing about this video is that there are people singing along. i saw this band a few times, and dont remember ANYONE liking them. also, the band had a staunchly hardline/ anti abortion song that cause a lot of drama for them.
i remember this tour very well. i think it was 1995. me and Josh Yochus went to san diego to see the show, so i actually missed the show at the Barn that this was filmed at. the tour was 108, Coalesce and Bloodlet. holy fuck. to some people now, that’s like a dream lineup. at the show in SD, there was maybe 100 people there.
i believe ive told this story before, but here goes again. Josh and I went down and i think there were like 3 or 4 shows that weekend. we got to the venue, which i believe was around 6th and C downtown. there was a fucking RAVE going on. im not joking. a rave. the rave ended around 11 or 1130, and then this dude named Squelch came up and did spoken word. i’d seen Squelch do spoken/performace art before, but this time was different. he had himself strung up on a fence or a cross, and was wearing a suit and had fake blood all over. there was stobe lights, and creepy music, and he kept laughing maniacally and saying random stuff, then gave fellatio to a handgun.
at midnight, yes MIDNIGHT, 108 took the stage. i was right up front, and had my camera ready, and as soon as the first notes rang out for “opposition”, someone knocked me forward and the batteries flew out of my camera. fucked.
Bloodlet took the stage next. one of my favorite bands now, i think i had only heard them a few times before this. i dont remember much about their time on stage.
Coalesce was up next, and it was about 2am at this point. they only had the first 7″ out at this time, and in fact the cd version has pictures from this show on the cover, taken by my friend Chad Ronillo. they were frantic and amazing in the original lineup.
Gehenna played last, and by the time they finished and we got out of the show, it was about 5am. we went back to Mike Cheese’s house, unrolled our sleeping bags on the kitchen floor, slept til about noon and then drove home.
one of the most clear images i have from that whole night is of Rob Fish. there was a back room in the building, where all the bands had their equipment and their merch set up on blankets, and there were a few couches around where people were randomly sleeping. Rob was sitting on the floor, with his back against a wall. i dont think id ever seen someone look so fucking bummed out in my life.
this particular video was shot by Ken Crawford, at the Barn in Riverside, CA on the same tour. i think the night before the san diego show. i love the fisheye.
again, i feel very fortunate to have filmed from this angle. jes and sean are very clear in the video. i set the camera on the amp at the beginning, so theres no movement. as soon as i knew things were going to explode, i picked up the camera.
As i had previously stated, I received a few live recordings recently. This is one of them.
I’m pretty sure this was recorded on a hand-held recording device, and not soundboard, but i could be wrong. The show was at the RCKNDY.
This was recorded on a tour after the release of If God Only Knew, but before the Oxymoron split or Heretic. Justin Kane was still on drums, and I’m assuming Tony “Tubes” was on guitar.
The sound quality and song selection was so good, I knew that i had to unleash this beast upon the world. You can tell that the mic wasn’t passed around very much (if at all) because Aaron’s voice is so prevalent. It’s very clear, and his added inflections come across very clearly.
Personally, I LOVE live recordings, and this one is an amazing example of a live recording. It’s interesting to hear Aaron pronounce Diablerie with a “die” instead of a “dee”.
It was cleaned up in a recording studio by Daniel Bieranowski. Mostly just editing out the feedback, clipping, etc. I am very grateful to Dan for helping out.
So listen and enjoy, and just wish that you were there.
last time Coalesce came through, a few things happened.
1. sean ingram got me hooked on whiskey
2. nathan ellis made me feel really embarrassed
3. they fucking blew me away
this time, a few more things happened
1. i possibly turned sean ingram into a whiskey snob
2. nellis appologized to me profusely
3. they fucking blew me away. not just on stage either. they are honestly one of the nicest bunch of people ive hung around in a long time. last time, i got so drunk that i had to be taken home and couldnt hang out after the show. this time, they all came to my salon the morning after the show, and we traded haircuts for vinyl.
i shot this video with my Flip camera when they played chain reaction on may 17th, 2010 on the tour with converge. the video starts off interesting, then gets rather boring for a while as my camera became fixated on their asses. but at around 4:19, it becomes clear that Jes wants to make things more interesting. i feel very lucky to have caught this footage. enjoy.
Wow, I’m a little late on this. My computer died and my only “real” access to the internet has been my phone up until now.
Anyways, Parasitic Skies (Seattle’s vegan straightedge monsters) have a new full length called “The Descent” out on Seventh Dagger. They continue where they left off on their 7″ “Embers” so if you liked that then you’ll be more than happy with this release. It’s angry as hell, heavy as fuck, and I love it. And so will you.
Check out the e-card to hear 4 of the new songs, and check out the package deal at Seventh Dagger.
inside was a CD case with about 8 CDs inside. each was unmarked, and there was no note inside.
i put the first CD into my computer, expecting the songs to open in iTunes. instead, a file folder came up showing that there were 2 zip files on he disc. the files only had a date and venue.
upon further investigation, each disc had between 2 and 8 zip files. each file was a live show, either soundboard or recorded in the audience with a hand held DAT recorder.
expect some really cool shit in the next few weeks. ive already got Dan from Resident Studios working on cleaning the shit up.
